Microsoft Windows Mobile Emulator Installation Instructions
For training purposes, GODMSurveyor can be installed in a program that emulates a Personal Digital Assistent (PDA) on a desktop computer.
The computer must be running either Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Vista.
Running the emulator requires a number of pieces of software that should be installed in the order below.
Once you have the emulator installed and GODMSurveyor installed in the emulator,
you can demonstrate how to use GODMSurveyor on a projector for a large group.
Scroll down until you see 'Files in This Download'
Unless you are sure you have a 64-bit computer with a 64-bit version of MS-Windows installed, click on the 'Download' button next to '32 BIT\setup.exe'
Select 'Run' to execute the installation
Follow the instructions in the installer until Virtual PC 2007 is installed
4. Installing Version 3.0 of the Emulator
Now we can install version 3.0 of the PDA emulator
Scroll down until you see 'Files in This Download'
Unless you are sure you are running a 64-bit version of Vista, click on the 'Download' button next to 'vs_emulator.exe'
Select 'Run' to execute the installation
Follow the instructions in the installer until the emulator is installed
5. Running the Emulator
The emulator should now be installed on your computer and will appear in the 'Start' menu.
Click on start and then click on 'Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 MSFP Emulator Images'
From the menu that appears select 'PocketPC - Coldboot'. You will only want to select this item the first time you run the emulator. Select 'PocketPC - Savestate' in the future.
The emulator should appear in a window and you should be able to use your mouse and keyboard as if they were the stylus and keyboard on the PDA.
6. Installing GODMSurveyor on the Emulator
We have provided a special web site to allow you to access the GODMSurveyor cabinet file for installation on a PDA.
Click on the 'Start' menu and select 'Internet Explorer'
For the URL enter 'www.niiss.org/CitSci'. Notice that this is the same URL as the typical CitSci web site but a different interface will appear that is customized for PDAs
Click on 'Download GODMSurveyor Cabinet File'
Leave 'Open file after download' checked and click 'Yes'. This will download GODMSurveyor, walk you through the installation process, and then deleted the cabinet file from the PDA.
You should now have GODMSurveyor installed on your PDA Emulator and be able to use it as described in the User's Guide for GODMSurveyor.
When you exit the emulator remember to select 'Yes' to save the emulator state and then select 'PocketPC - Savestate' to run the emulator again.
